As the  summer days  begin to shorten and at the peak of the rainy season, we are back to school. One more year of learning, growing, friendship and changes.

This new school year brings a new opportunity to learn, share thoughts, discover opportunities and consolidate our language learning. 

MODULE VIII EXAM

Our last exam will cover the topics of:

. Wishes in the Present / Future
. Wishes in the Past which are actually regrets for things that didn't happen.
. Third conditional sentences.

Module VII - Reported Speech.

If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the speaker’s exact words (direct speech), but reported (indirect) speech. Therefore, you need to learn how to transform direct speech into reported speech. The structure is a little different depending on whether you want to transform a statement, question or request.

In reported speech, you often have to change the pronoun depending on who says what,  and the time expression.

Example

You must change the tense if the introductory clause is in Simple Past (e. g. He said). 

Example

He said, “I am happy.” – He said that he was happy.

Type	Example
direct speech	“I speak English.”
reported speech	He said that he spoke English.

Questions

                                       

Type		Example
With a question word	direct speech	“Why don’t you speak English?”
	reported speech	He asked me why I didn’t speak English.
without a question word	direct speech	“Do you speak English?”
	reported speech	He asked me whether / if I spoke English.

Requests

Type	Example
direct speech	“Carol, speak English.“
reported speech	He told Carol to speak English.

The exam for module VII will be on May 9th for 3rd ABCD, May 10th for 2nd ABCD and on Friday May 11th for 3rd EFG and 2nd EFG.

Other changes to be considered are in pronouns and time expressions. Also if we are reporting a statement, a question, or a request.

The patient to the doctor: 'Can I get a second opinion?' 

The doctor again: 'Yes, you are very ugly too...'

Exam practice for Module VI

 Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.

Example

If I say: My phone was stolen I focus on the fact that it was stolen. I don't know who did it.


Some times sounds more polite to say: A mistake was made, than to blame someone specifically.

We also use passive voice when we don't want to acknowledge any personal responsibility.

Module V -- Leisure.

Leisure Activities

 Now with the upcoming exams and projects to turn in, the word leisure has a special meaning for us.
Leisure is the time we have for ourselves, free from school and obligations.

We all embark on different activities in our leisure time. Whether it is playing sport, reading, or doing social activities like hanging out with friends or visiting relatives, our leisure time holds so many opportunities that can benefit us in the short and long term, but it is how we use this leisure time that is important and what to fulfill it with, so we can experience and feel these benefits.

 The exam dates are: Thursday, Feb. 16th for second ABCD,  and third ABCD,  and Friday Feb. 17th for second EFG, and third EFG.

Exam practice for Module IV

When we think about the future,  we mix in our heads popular science and popular culture, and can either imagine a perfect world or an apocalyptic one,  but although it is true that our circumstances can create us,  it is also true that there are many things that we do to create our own circumstances. If we make smart choices now, the  future will look much more promising.

Let’s think about the future like a highway which will take us to our final destination.
